Today, via their Japanese site, Nintendo announced the successor to the Nintendo DS, the “3DS” (temporary name). It will include backwards compatibility for all DS and DSi games, and most importantly,
“games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.”
It will launch in Japan sometime before March 2011, and most likely the US shortly after. Stay tuned for additional details which will be announced in June, during E3.
Count me in. Regardless of the fact that Nintendo already tried (and failed) to introduce 3D into the handheld market, this is the DS line we’re talking about. Being their most successful system and surely a massive source of revenue, they’re not likely to mess this one up.
Fingers crossed for a Final Fantasy VII 3D remake.
