Marvel vs Capcom 3 Officially Announced

Scott April 20, 2010 4

In a total shock to the gaming community, Capcom officially announced a game no one expected was coming. Marvel vs Capcom 3, was shown to a small group in Hawaii last week at Capcom’s big event, but not until today was it officially announced.  Check out the sweet trailer.

While no actual gameplay has been shown, a stylized trailer featuring Marvel Comics’ Wolverine, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk fighting against Ryu, Morrigan and Chris Redfield (being the only new character to the series to be revealed). But who else could be hiding in the new roster? The last Marvel vs Capcom game featured a whopping 56 characters. Would the new game, which will most likely be a 2.5 D fighter carry such a large number of characters? Or would we see a small roster but with new characters and less known characters removed? Chances are that will be the case. But who would you add to the roster?

On the Marvel Side.

The Fantastic Four: Maybe not the entire team, but if they did maybe have them play as one selectable character with moves to interchange between them. Basically have them all share one life bar. But who wouldn’t want to see a Thing vs Hulk match up in this crazy game? Mister Fantastic would have an insane combo game with distance being key. Dalhsim rip off sure, but it’s Mister Fantastic! The Invisible Woman could have a very defensive quality with teleports (technically her just walking across the screen invisibly) and shields as well as shield blasts. Johnny Storm would be the projectile member of the group and The Thing would round out as a brawler. If combined into one character like I mentioned, but’d be a potent mix and potentially unstoppable. Better to break them up.

The Runaways: Sure most people don’t know who the Runaways are, but with cool abilities like a powered down super Skurll, a telepathic link to a dinosaur, a little girl who is as strong as most super heroes and more, who wouldn’t want to play as the hip young teens? Maybe not all of them would make the roster, but one or two here or there would be nice.

The Punisher: I can’t see The Punisher playing much different from Cable. Both would be armed to the teeth with large guns featuring ridiculous combos. For sure this is a spamming type character with projectiles galore. A long distance character for the most part with a deadly short game and some wicked combos.

Deadpool: Deadpool is such a great character for a game as crazy as this series has been. Swords, a loud mouth and enough guns to make  The Punisher think it’s excessive, Deadpool would just be a fun character and surely come up as a fan favorite. The popularity of the character has skyrocketed as of late with more than four comics featuring the Merc with a Mouth hitting every month. He’d be another well rounded character who’d play like a mix between Cable and Wolverine.

Daredevil: The Man Without Fear could be one of those truly great up close and personal picks. With incredible martial arts skill and his cane/whip he could have some awe inspiring super combos. I’d imagine he’d play a lot like Spider-Man.

Doctor Octopus: There aren’t nearly enough great villains on the Marvel roster in the last game. Doctor Octopus is one of those iconic villains and the sheer thought of all the incredible combos and special moves make me giddy. With the long limbs he’d play a lot like Dahlsim but with more speed.

Those are just a few ideas and you can see clearly how many more possibilities there are. But what about the Capcom side?

Nathan RAD Spencer (Bionic Commando): With that large bionic arm, large selection of weapons and his semi-recent return to the world of gaming he’d be an excellent choice for the new Capcom line up. He’d be a long range character, and would probably play a lot like Spider-Man, swinging off the walls and binding his characters up in his large bionic fist and cable.

Snow Pirates (Lost Planet series): Snow pirates are just plain cool. They have giant guns, cables that fire from their wrists, and giant robotic suits to help them take out enemies. I know they’re kind of like the Bionic Commando character of RAD Spencer, but with those giant suits their super combos would be quite the visual treat.

MegaMan X: I love MegaMan I really do, but I never played as him on Marvel vs Capcom 2. He seemed weak in comparison to the characters he’d fight against. He had a freaking soccer ball as a special move. It was lame. His younger, but much cooler brother MegaMan X is what this series needs. He’s tall, cool, sleek and bad ass. Buster canon and all he’d be the perfect match for whatever Marvel could throw at him.

Frank West (Dead Rising): Already an exclusive american Character in Tatsunoko vs Capcom he’s a natural choice for the new game. He has an insane roster of moves he’s used to fight hordes of the undead. And sure taking a beach umbrella against wolverine would be a little crazy, but that’s what this game is about. The entire series has been this crazy.

Okami: Okami wasn’t technically made by Capcom but rather Clover Studios but that didn’t stop Capcom from putting an Okami character in Tatsunoko vs Capcom. But this time why not put the wolf herself in the game? It’d be a strange character choice sure, but it’d keep players on their toes. It’d be no stranger than MvC2′s Servbot.

Again this is a small sampling of the characters that Capcom has put out there in the past ten years. There are many more that could find their way into the game. But who would you want to see added to either roster?
