Remember Dilbert? He’s back – in movie form

I hope you guys like the 90′s because we are going retro!

The comic strip Dilbert is becoming a movie. I haven’t read a Dilbert comic since it’s heyday back in the 1990′s, when its satire of workplace politics and lunacy was ahead of its time. Lately, I leave all my office antics to either Mike Judge or Steve Carell.

Phoenix Entertainment and Intrigue Entertainment have got the rights to the Scott Adams strip, with The Office regular Ken Kwapis set to direct. No word on who would don the spectacles and tie for the lead character. Also no word on Dogbert’s role in the film. As some remember, there was a Dilbert animated series back in 1999 with the voice talents of Daniel Stern and Chris Elliott.

I don’t see the need for a Dilbert film. The comic is no longer as popular as it used to be and it’s been surpassed by other films and shows, like the few I referenced. There is a chance that this movie will never get made but, for now, things seem to be moving forward.

Most troubling is the pairing of director Kwapis with producer Tariq Jalil. For those who don’t know, Kwapis is behind movies like License to Wed, He’s Just Not That Into You and, of course, Follow That Bird. Producer Tariq Jalil had been attached to that awful Operation Repo show, Marmaduke and the dreaded Americanized Spaced remake.  Both guys make movies that are pretty bland and forgettable. Neither get me excited for an adaptation of a dated comic strip.

But who knows, maybe they’ll nail it. Maybe America needs a Dilbert movie at this point, when so many people are still looking for jobs. What better way to feel good about your own unemployment by watching others despise their careers!
