Meryl Streep to play Margaret Thatcher

Shine up that statue for her already, folks!

Meryl Streep, perhaps the most celebrated actress in the world, is in talks to play former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in a biopic directed by MAMMA MIA’S Phyllida Lloyd, according to THR. THATCHER “is set in 1982 and tracks Thatcher as she tries to save her career in the 17 days preceding the 1982 Falklands War.” The script is written by Brian Fillis, a collaboration with producer Damien Jones.

Another highly respected actor, Jim Broadbent, is in talks to play Thatcher’s husband, Denis. This thing has Oscar written all over it, am I right?

The story is fascinating and I can’t think of a better actress than Streep to play the part. Come to think of it, I can’t think of a better actress than Streep to play any part. She’s pure gold. While she has had some missteps recently (we can all agree that IT’S COMPLICATED was lame. Same goes for LIONS FOR LAMBS), she is almost always the best part of any film she’s attached to. Just watch JULIE & JULIA. A biopic about Margaret Thatcher just seems like the perfect movie for her. In a few years, I’m sure this will be another award winner for her.
