“Conan, what is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you and to hear the lamentation of the women.” What’s also best? A release date has been set for Marcus Nispel’s reimagining of Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian in 3D, now simply titled CONAN, and that date is August 19, 2011.
The film stars relative newcomer Jason Momoa in the title role as the mythical warrior with the cast rounded out by Rachel Nichols (STAR TREK), Stephen Lang (AVATAR), Ron Perlman (HELLBOY), and Rose McGowan (PLANET TERROR). Plot details are tight but its rumored that it sticks more to the original story of Howard’s book rather than the John Milius film version.
It will be facing two other 3D movies at the box office, FRIGHT NIGHT 3D and Robert Rodriguez’s SPY KIDS 4: ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD. FINAL DESTINATION 5 opens one week later as well. I’m wondering if with this influx of 3D movies into the marketplace in 2011, if that will limit the screens able to show these films? Some movie theaters still haven’t converted their projectors to 3D yet thus limiting whether they can show the films. I, personally, am not a fan of 3D, and will only see those movies in that format if they were originally shot in 3D as the upconverted films (ALICE IN WONDERLAND, CLASH OF THE TITANS) look like muddled gray messes. Will you go see this film? It has some big shoes to fill as the original is a classic.
