Netflix Picks: MY BLOODY VALENTINE

The internet is a wonderful thing. Very Aware is highlighting some movies that Netflix is offering with its Watch Instantly feature. Movies you may have missed or movies you may have forgotten. Netflix is a treasure trove, let’s dig in!

MOVIE:
MY BLOODY VALENTINE

YEAR:
1981

CAST:
Paul Kelman, Lori Hallier, Neil Affleck

PLOT:

A decades old folk tale surrounding a deranged murderer killing those who celebrate Valentine’s Day, turns out to be true to legend when a group defies the killer’s order and people start turning up dead.

There’s something so fun and scary about MY BLOODY VALENTINE. It’s an old school horror film, one full of promiscuous teenagers and a masked killer who lays waste to quite a few innocent Canadians. In other words, there’s a lot of running and screaming. Is there a better way to spend your Halloween weekend?

Directed by George Mihalka, MY BLOODY VALENTINE is pure slasher bliss. The movie takes place in the small mining town of Valentine Bluff, Nova Scotia. This little burg doesn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day because of a major mining disaster that happened twenty years before. The sole survivor of the disaster, Harry Warden, went on a killing spree and promised to return if the town ever celebrated Valentine’s Day again.

Of course, that was twenty years ago. Surely Valentine’s Day doesn’t pose a threat now, does it?

I love the premise of this movie. There’s the mythical killer, the promised return, a group of young miners willing to risk their lives for a little sex. When Warden does return, things become very fun. He roams around town taking out people one by one in his menacing miner outfit. Warden’s look is iconic and I don’t think it’s ever been topped by any slaher film.

I know many of you like to watch scary movies on Halloween and I can’t recommend MY BLOODY VALENTINE enough. While actually scary it’s also light and fun at times. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and has a whole lot of spirit. The remake that came out a few years ago doesn’t even come close to the original.
