Hanks confirms TRIPLE FRONTIER

Who doesn’t love Tom Hanks?! Before it had just been in the rumor stages of casting but now it’s been confirmed to Coming Soon that Tom Hanks has officially been cast in TRIPLE FRONTIER.  The film marks the reunion of Kathryn Bigelow and her HURT LOCKER scriber Mark Boal, both of whom walked away with Oscars for their part in the acclaimed Iraq War thriller.

“Tom Hanks is starring in the film,” producer Charles Roven said, “and we’re still looking to cast the other roles. We’re hoping to start shooting the movie sometime in mid-March.”

TRIPLE FRONTIER is an ensemble picture set in the notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil where the Igazu and Parana rivers converge — making “la triple frontera” difficult to monitor and a haven for organized crime.  Recent rumors had also suggested that it would be retitled to SLEEPING DOGS, although Roven did not speak specifically to the title change, he referred to the project by the former title.

The project seems like a good fit for all involved.  It’s been quite some time since seeing Hanks take on a serious dramatic role that doesn’t involve a silly haircut (THE DA VINCI CODE) or a Texan twang (CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR).  I would expect Bigelow & Boal’s movie to put Hanks into a gritty drug crime thriller and thus, back into the Oscar nominated roles we all love him in.  What are your thoughts?
