Lately we’ve seen the release of many terrible female driven comedies at the box office. SEX AND THE CITY 2, THE SWITCH, and anything starring Katherine Heigl is what we’ve had to endure. On May 13 there is finally a ray of hope! Save the date for the potentially amazing film, BRIDESMAIDS.
The cast includes some very talented and hilarious ladies- Kristen Wiig (SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE), Rose Byrne (GET HIM TO THE GREEK), Ellie Kemper (THE OFFICE) and Melissa McCarthy (GILMORE GIRLS) to name a few. Being described as a female version of THE HANGOVER, the film centers on Annie (Wigg), a simple and single thirty something Midwestern gal who is asked to be her best friend Lillian’s (Maya Rudolph) maid of honor. However, having never done the job, and having a poor dating record to boot, she struggles to please the snobby rich bridesmaids at every bridesmaid event. One of Lillian’s best friends (Byrne) turns out to be the bridesmaid from hell, who is essentially looking to take over maid of honor duties from Annie.
Weddings always make for the best backdrop for hijinks to ensue, right?! The film is directed by Paul Feig, who knows how to direct comedy having helmed episodes of THE OFFICE, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT and FREAKS AND GEEKS. The script is also written by Wigg and Annie Mumolo, who was a member of the famed comedy troupe, The Groundlings. The movie is produced by Judd Apatow (THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN) so you know that the script in addition to being funny, will have a lot of heart to it.
I only wish we had a trailer with this poster debuting for this film. I’m dying to see this! It will be nice to see a film that doesn’t follow the stale formula of a workaholic gal who’s biological clock is ticking- needing to find Mr. Right, who turns out to be (shocker!) her male best friend. Fingers crossed that BRIDESMAIDS won’t elicit any over the top eye rolls or hissing at the screen.
