Like peanut butter and jelly, Kate Hudson and romantic comedies go hand in hand. The newest entry on her resume is SOMETHING BORROWED which hits theaters on May 6. Thanks to iVillage, we have a look at the poster.
The film, based on a novel by Emily Giffin, also stars Ginnifer Goodwin (BIG LOVE), Colin Egglesfield (MELROSE PLACE) and John Krasinski (THE OFFICE). In SOMETHING BORROWED, the titular “something” isn’t an object- it’s Darcy’s (Hudson) fiancé Dex (Egglesfield), who’s borrowed by her best friend Rachel (Goodwin), an unhappy single lawyer. Oh… snap!
After getting a bit too drunk on her 30th birthday, Rachel wakes up the next morning to find herself in bed with Dex… which isn’t exactly something a best friend should do! Their one night of passion soon blossoms into a full-blown affair, forcing Rachel to question what she believes about love, friendship and her own ethical code. And, while all of this is going on, Rachel’s longtime pal Ethan (Krasinski) stands by her side, harboring a juicy secret of his own. Perhaps Rachel will find that Ethan — and not her best friend’s fiancé — is really her true love?
SOMETHING BORROWED is your standard easy beach read or as some like to call the genre, “chick lit”. It also spawned a sequel, Something Blue, that’s told in Darcy’s perspective, which I found to be an interesting literary take given there are always two sides to every story. Perhaps we will have a film sequel to look forward to as well?!
As most of you know, I am both a fan of the romantic comedy and a “cinematic cutter”. I have to say this film won’t be the one to bring the genre back, but at least one week later I can see BRIDESMAIDS to clear it out of my head.
