Will Mortensen play General Zod in SUPERMAN?

At least it’s not Lex Luthor, right?

Heat Vision is reporting that Zack Snyder, Christopher Nolan and the folks behind SUPERMAN are eyeing the one-time king of Middle-Earth to play General Zod in their franchise reboot. As we all know, Zod was played by Terence Stamp back in the 70′s Donner films. No idea how big or vital his part would be for the new series. However, seeing as how they want Mortensen, you can bet it would be a juicy role.

Viggo is currently trying to work out a starring bit in Universal’s SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN but could presumably do both (or just SUPERMAN if his other deal falls through). Heat Vision claims that, much like Kevin Costner, no official talks have begun but Snyder and company definitely want Mortensen for the part.

More surprising than the casting is the news of Zod’s return. You would think the new film would shy away from characters already used in previous film (like Luthor) but it seems like that isn’t happening. It’s understandable, there aren’t many well-known Superman villains…though I would love to see Brainiac on the big screen.

I’m not too worried, it’s not like Viggo would be doing a dead-on Stamp impression, right? Besides, the guy is a solid actor and hasn’t played a really devious character yet. I’m curious to see what he’d do with the part. But I guess this means the part of Roland in THE DARK TOWER is all but Javier Bardem’s, right?
