For a brief, beautiful moment earlier in the year, it seemed like the SCREAM series was coming back in full force. The cast had reassembled, shooting had commenced and that ghostface mask was making its presence known in leaked set pictures. As a true fan of the first (but only the first) film, I was curious to see what Wes Craven and company could come up with.
Well SCREAM 4 came and went without much fanfare. Critics were generous to the film while most audiences reacted with a subdued “meh”. Personally, I thought it was enjoyable for the most part. As good as the first? Nope. As bad as the third? Not even close. Even though I didn’t hate the movie like some, I was pretty convinced it was the last one.
Not so, says producer Harvey Weinstein. Speaking with MTV at the Cannes Film Festival. Here’s his take:
“I’m sure [director Wes Craven is] going to do a sequel, I’m sure he’s going to do a sequel [...] Foreign [sales] are so strong that we’ll do over $100 million worldwide. It’s at $90 now, with about five or six major countries to go and a lot of small ones. We’ll probably do $110 million [...] I wish it would have been better domestically,” he confessed, “But it’s not the worst thing in the world that’s ever happened.”
This matches with what Craven had said before the film premiered. The director mentioned that he and screenwriter Kevin Williamson had planned SCREAM 4 to be the first in a new trilogy. While Weinstein didn’t emphatically say a whole trilogy was still in the works, he seemed confident that at least one more was on its way.
I’m scratching my head on this one. Sure, SCREAM 4 isn’t a resounding failure but I think the box office receipts prove one thing: there aren’t a whole lot of fans anymore. In fact, I’d wager that much of the gross is due to the curiosity factor. I’d bet that a SCREAM 5 (or SCR5AM or whatever they’ll call it) wouldn’t even pull in the $90 million of SCREAM 4.
What do you think, is it time to call it a day? Do we need another SCREAM? More importantly, do we want another one?

We need a Scream 5. I'm happy to hear this.
SCREAM 5 FTW
I'd love to see it done Scream has always been and always will be an enertaining series unlike examples like Saw which even Scream 4 commented on that plus references hinting towards movies like The Ring, The Grudge, Resident Evil, and World at War. I like these movies but the reference Scream 4 makes towards them is true especially since the serial killers in movies like Saw doesn't even kill them just does torture porn as 1 character in Scream 4 says.
