The 2011 Cannes Film Festival is set to get under way in less than a week, and there is one film in particular that has captured my interest. That film is Nicolas Winding Refn’s DRIVE. The competition will be fierce this year, but this film should have those very fickle and jaded Cannes audiences cheering.
DRIVE, based on a novel by James Sallis, stars Ryan Gosling as a Hollywood stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway car driver. Cue record scratch! A heist film about a stunt car driver starring super hottie Gosling?! Needless to say, I’m a fan of everything mentioned in that last sentence.
I’ve been a fan of Refn’s since BRONSON and VALHALLA RISING and for his follow up, he’s chosen very wisely. The film also has a stellar supporting cast of Carey Mulligan (NEVER LET ME GO), Albert Brooks (BROADCAST NEWS), Oscar Isaacs (SUCKER PUNCH), Christina Henricks (MAD MEN), Bryan Cranston (BREAKING BAD) and Ron Perlman (HELLBOY).
In this intense two minute clip you can only view on the Cannes website, it follows Gosling in the aftermath of a heist, attempting to evade the law. It’s a very promising look at the film, sure to impress people with its Michael Mann shooting style influence and amazing sound design, as a radio scanner melds into Cliff Martinez’s (THE LINCOLN LAWYER) score.
Check out the clip and tell us your thoughts below. I, for one, can’t wait to see this film that debuts stateside on September 16.

this isn't a cliff martinez score. you have the music wrong.
I checked it on IMDB. They indeed have it listed as Cliff Martinez. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0553498/
