Drew Barrymore to Direct HEIST SOCIETY

It’s always a great day in Tinsletown when a female director lands a new gig.  It’s even better (and more magical) when the director is cute-as-a-button actress Drew Barrymore.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, She has come aboard to direct and produce HEIST SOCIETY, a young adult thriller being made by Warner Bros.

Barrymore joins Denise Di Novi and Di Novi Pictures’ Alison Greenspan as producers on the project.  Warner Brothers won the rights last year in a multi-studio bidding war for the novel by Ally Carter. As if this news isn’t good enough, screenwriter Shauna Cross - who wrote WHIP IT, Barrymore’s well-regarded female-centric roller derby flick starring Ellen Page and Kristen Wiig – is set to adapt.

The book follows a young woman named Katarina Bishop who hails from an extended family of cat burglars and master thieves. The girl leaves her illicit life behind, but when her father is the prime suspect in the case of a mobster’s missing art collection, she assembles a crew to track down the art and steal it back.

It’s being said that the studio is aging the characters a notch into their early 20s. Barrymore will also supervise the writing.  However, before Barrymore can work on SOCIETY, she is signed to helm HOW TO BE SINGLE, a romcom for New Line.

Not only is she adorable, but she is really smart when it comes to the projects that she chooses (with the exception of the dreadful HE’S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU), especially those that she directs and produces.  What are your thoughts?  Are you excited for Barrymore to direct another feature?
