The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer might direct NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH with Ben Stiller

Akiva Schaffer is one-third of The Lonely Island. Together, he and his two pals (Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone) have created some hilarious and iconic digital shorts for SNL. They were also involved with HOT ROD (directed by Schaffer) and last year’s MACGRUBER (directed by Taccone) along with two stellar comedy albums. If you don’t love these guys then I feel sorry for you.

It looks like Schaffer is getting some work outside of SNL and The Lonely Island. Deadline says that Fox wants him to direct NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH, a long-gestating comedy that was recently rewritten by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. The site also says that Ben Stiller is circling the project now that he’s wrapped Brett Ratner’s TOWER HEIST. Stiller’s involvement would transform this into a much bigger project.

Here’s Deadline’s take on the character and a little of the plot:

The lead role is a newcomer to the neighborhood whose idea to join the neighborhood watch to get socially acclimated goes awry when aliens get involved.

The film is something of a buddy comedy so even if Stiller signs on (nothing’s official) Fox still needs to find another actor to co-star. Will Ferrell was attached for awhile so maybe he’ll sign on. Might I suggest Jon Hamm, that guy is dying to get a lead part in a comedy.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to see Stiller star in a comedy directed by Schaffer and written by Rogen and Goldberg but I’d really, really like to see him make ZOOLANDER 2. Damn you Paramount! Get your act together!
