The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer was recently hired to direct NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH, a comedy starring Ben Stiller as a man who joins the local protection group in order to bond with his male neighbors. But things get complicated when they guys discvoer a plot to destroy the world. While that might sound like a film as silly and family friendly as, say, NIGHT OF THE MUSEUM, the script has been re-written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg which means it’ll probably have some bite.
While Stiller is quite a draw the script calls for a major co-star, someone able to carry scenes with or without Stiller. According to THR, that co-star will be Vince Vaughn. Stiller and Vaughn go way back of course. They co-starred in DODGEBALL (seen above) as arch rivals and both cameoed in ANCHORMAN among others. They’re good buds who have chemistry.
That being said, I’m afraid NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH will have both actors fall into their all-too-familiar characters. Stiller will be stressed and overworked, Vaughn will be the laid back cool guy who talks quickly and offends. I’m hoping that’s not the case but that formula makes money.
Shawn Levy is producing NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH for Fox. With Levy, Stiller, Rogen, Goldberg and now Vaughn involved, this is shaping up to be a formable comedy.

I’m pleased that I am not a News Corp, shareholder! With the current problems it is facing in the UKwith the now closed, News of the World newspaper. Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp based in Delaware; is also facing a legal challenge from its shareholders. Shareholders, including investment funds, labor and municipal pension funds are accusing Murdoch of misusing News Corp assets, by treating the company like a family candy jar, which he raids whenever his appetite strikes. It looks like the trouble are just starting!
