A comedy is only as good as its cast. Don Scardino’s BURT WONDERSTONE stands a chance to be very good.
The comedy already has Steve Carell in the title role playing a Las Vegas magician who breaks from his partner and then finds himself overshadowed by a younger, hip street magician who steals all his thunder. While Carell would be enough to get an audience in theaters, WONDERSTONE possibly has another main draw now: Jim Carrey. Deadline says that Carrey is in talks to co-star in the film though it’s not clear who he would play. Considering he’s the same age as Carell (they’re 49? Shit, now I feel old!) I don’t think he’ll play the younger magician. Perhaps Carell’s old partner? Jason Reitman recently did doctoring on the script by HORRIBLE BOSSES scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein so maybe he raised the age of the nemesis.
This wouldn’t be the first time Carrey and Carell have worked together. The two actors co-starred in BRUCE ALMIGHTY together, a movie so successful that Carell got a spin-off sequel. They also both starred in the animated HORTON HEARS A WHO. It still remains to be seen what type of comedy WONDERSTONE will be. A family-friendly film like BRUCE ALMIGHTY? A raunchy comedy like HORRIBLE BOSSES? Maybe more dramatic like some of Reitman’s movies? I don’t know about that, I just hope the picture is good.
