I tend to abhor 3D in all of its iterations, but something about Disney’s rereleases of classic Disney films (from the Disney Renaissance, as it were) intrigues me. Can 2D cell animation successfully be converted into 3D? And can it be done realistically? Well, according to the box office receipts of Disney’s THE LION KING, the answer is yes. With a staggering and kingly gross of $93.4 million, says BoxOfficeMojo, the film is only the first in a line of films from the Disney canon to be released in 3D. Next up is the romantic classic BEAUTY AND THE BEAST IN 3D, whose poster was revealed today on ComingSoon.Net. The 3D Blu-ray edition of the film was released on October 4th, as well as THE LION KING 3D, according to Blu-ray.com. The theatrical release of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST 3D is scheduled for January 13th, 2012.
The poster itself doesn’t really elaborate on the details of 3D, but does it really need to? The film is so beloved and well known that the title itself does all the explaining for it. Singing teapots and candelabras? A ferocious, um, kind beast roaring at you on a giant screen in 3D? The subtlely designed environments accentuated to immerse the audience? I think even a 3D dissenter like myself can get on board for that deal.
