Curtis Hanson, the director behind L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, 8 MILE and WONDER BOYS, is experiencing some health problems. Sadly, complications following a recent heart surgery are forcing the director to step down from his production OF MEN AND MAVERICKS with just fifteen days left on the schedule. But all is not lost for the film. Deadline reports that Michael Apted will step up and take over production while Hanson mends.
OF MEN AND MAVERICKS is a Walden Media drama about surfer Jay Moriarty (Jonny Weston) who takes on a rough area of Northern California coast calls The Mavericks. Gerard Butler, Abigail Spencer and Elisabeth Shue co-star.
Apted’s track record includes GORILLAS IN THE MIST, NELL, several episodes of HBO’s ROME and the last installment of THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA. So it’s not like Hanson is turning over the project to some hack. Still, it’s a shame that he won’t be able to finish the film. Hopefully he recovers quickly.
OF MEN AND MAVERICKS is scheduled to open October 2012, which gives Hanson plenty of time to rest up, get healthy and come back to promote it.
Thanks to Cinema Blend for the heads up.
