How do you feel about THE BOURNE LEGACY, the Tony Gilroy spin-off of the popular series? Are you excited to see star Jeremy Renner expand the BOURNE universe? Are you not interested because Matt Damon isn’t involved. Or maybe, like me, you’re just not sure yet.
Renner spoke with Empire and revealed a bit about the his character and the type of movie LEGACY will be.
So who will Renner be playing?
“My character is called Aaron Cross,but he ends up having a bunch of different names. For fans of the franchise, [The Bourne Legacy] has that same ticking clock, but it’s a new programme and new characters.”
Aaron Cross, eh? That is definitely a top-secret assassin name.
What about Treadstone? What about the feel and mood of the first three films? How will LEGACY compare. Renner, once again:
“Yeah, it’s that same deal, it’s just a new set of agents with a different leash. It’s the same tempo and pace but more expansive and bigger. The differences are pretty vast but you’ll know it’s a Bourne movie.”
On one hand, this is good news. Gilroy is a talented chap and it’ll be nice to see him take on the franchise. On the other hand, it’s kind of a shame that they are going to be sticking to the exact same formula. It would be nice to see something new, something that sets it apart. It doesn’t have to be a period piece or emotional drama but I’d like to see something different aside from the cast.
When Renner was first announced as the new face of the series, I suggested they make him a villain. I imagined his character like Jason Bourne only completely brain-washed and willing to take orders from Treadstone. Hell, they could even set him up to take on Jason Bourne in a later installment. But it looks like my wishes are dashed. Still, THE BOURNE LEGACY could be one of the few spin-offs that works.

I like Renner, but I like the Bourne series just the way it is…done. There’s no way to really add a meaningful installment to the series at this point. As good as Renner is, Damon has done everything already as Jason Bourne. If they want Renner as a spy, there are a million other ways they can do it.
