Russell Brand is a charming, attractive Brit (right? Do the ladies dig Brand?) but does he have what it takes to go toe-to-toe with POTUS?
The Hollywood Reporter says that Brand will produce and star in THE PRESIDENT STOLE MY GIRLFRIEND, a new comedy at Warner Bros written by Matt Portenoy. The idea was hatched inside the actor’s Branded Films company.
Brand describes the film to THR:
“In this movie, the president steals the girlfriend of a sexy hippie—me, obviously. It was inspired by the night I naively invited [Warners president] Jeff Robinov for dinner.”
See? Charming!
One hopes that THE PRESIDENT STOLE MY GIRLFRIEND is more in line with FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL rather than ARTHUR. Brand is a legitimately funny dude (though he rubs many the wrong way) and it’s a shame that he hasn’t had many opportunities to show his talents to an American audience. In many ways, it feels like he’s been thrusted upon the country, as if we’ve been forced to like him. Maybe people will warm to him if he’s given the right material.
It seems he’s in good hands with Portenoy. The writer just worked on a well-received rewrite of the new PORKY’S remake and also wrote a segment in MOVIE 43, a new anthology film produced by Peter Farrelly.
This news leads to another big question: who can they cast as the president? Who can bring the funny and still remain presidential? My choice: Jeff Goldblum. That guy is comedy gold and I’d vote for him in a heartbeat.
