A new version of SCARFACE is coming your way courtesy of screenwriter David Ayer, who has written the screenplays for TRAINING DAY and STREET KINGS. ComingSoon.net reported that producers Martin Bregma (who produced Brian De Palma’s 1983 version) and Marc Shmuger have hired Ayers to write a contemporary update of the story. The film has its origins from Howard Hawks’ 1932 masterpiece SCARFACE: THE SHAME OF A NATION, which itself was based on a 1929 Armitage Trail novel. Ayer says that he has been studying both the Howard Hawks directed film as well as Brian De Palma’s version. The latter film starred Al Pacino and has since become a cult classic.
How do you think the story will translate to a contemporary setting? How different do you think the elements will be in the 21st century as opposed to the late 1980’s? How far do you think Ayers will push the content of the film?
