Last week, we finally got out first look at SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, an action-adventure film about the fairy tale character and her battle against the evil witch. Now we get the first trailer for that film’s biggest competitor, MIRROR, MIRROR. One this is for sure: Tarsem Singh’s take on Snow White will be nothing like the others.
For starters, this movie won’t be dark. It’s light and silly and not necessarily in a good way. A lot of jokes shown in this trailer fall flat and Julia Roberts seems very bored. The story here is also radically different. In it, Snow White (Lily Collins) bands together with the dwarves to take on the evil witch and prevent her from marrying the lovely prince (Armie Hammer). Last but not least, Singh’s direction seems zany and jokey, almost like a cartoon. All these elements come together for something that looks a bit absurd and childish. It feels like Burton’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND to me which isn’t a good sign. In other words, just go rent the original Disney classic.
How will MIRROR, MIRROR do against SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN? Which film will come out on top? Will they both do well? Maybe studios have too much faith in their respective pictures and both will fail miserably. Or maybe they’ll both do killer business and we’ll be assaulted with more and more retellings of classic fairy tales.
