The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the poster for the 84th Academy Awards, reports Deadline, with the theme “Celebrate the movies”. In sparkling orbs and lens flare on the left of the Oscar statuette are iconic images from the films GONE WITH THE WIND, CASABLANCA, GIANT, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, THE GODFATHER, DRVING MISS DAISY, FORREST GUMP, and GLADIATOR, all of which , with the exception of GIANT which won Best Director George Stevens, have been distinguished by a Best Picture Oscar win. Designers Anthony Goldschmidt, and Mark and Karen Crawford, of the firm Blood&Chocolate, used the images to portray eight decades of film and the Academy Awards.
While “celebrate the movies in all of us” is a rather weak tagline, it’s not horrid. Let’s face it, the Oscars have never had great taglines and they’ve all been retreads on the same theme. But at the top, reading, “Life. Camera. Action.”, is a rather clever line. I think it would have been better to just leave it at that rather than add the schmaltz. Again, the statuette is pictured without its base, standing tall as always, an icon in the world of film.
