Woody Allen, who has spent the last few years being written off as a bit of a has been who keeps churning out film after film without too much thought, released a minor hit earlier this year with his film MIDNIGHT IN PARIS. It was his most financially successful film of all time, grossing $143 million worldwide. The film garnered great reviews and has gotten Woody Allen a Golden Globe nod for bot Best Director and Best Screenplay. He’s back again with next summer’s anthology structured comedy NERO FIDDLED, moving the locale from Paris to Rome.
Sony Pictures Classics, which distributed MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, will also back Allen for NERO FIDDLED. Says the studio to Cinema Blend:
“More laughs in this one than you can imagine. We know it’s a bit premature, but thank you Woody and company, for granting us the perfect summer comedy of 2012. Keep ‘em coming.”
The film stars Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, Alec Baldwin, Greta Gerwig, Penelope Cruz, and Robert Benigni, and Woody Allen, making his return to acting, his last appearance being in 2006’s SCOOP. Eisenberg, who’s played the awkward acerbic character in films like ADVENTURELAND, ZOMBIELAND< and THE SOCIAL NETWORK, seems pretty perfect to jump into the Allen persona. Cruz won an Academy Award for best Supporting Actress for Allen’s 2008 film VICKY CHRISTINA BARCELONA. The film is scheduled for release for the summer of 2012.
