Like many Stephen King remakes, the proposed reinvention of CARRIE has been kind of forgotten over time. It’s not a bad idea, creating a more reality-based take on the source material could lead to a very scary film. However, the first one is so well-known that a remake seems kind of unnecessary, no?
Not if MGM and Screen Gems continue to take it seriously. Deadline says they’ve picked the very impressive Kimberly Peirce to helm the project. Peirce, best known for BOYS DON’T CRY and STOP-LOSS, isn’t a light horror film hack. She’s a serious director who has created a couple of strong films, both of which have a few similarities to the thematic elements in CARRIE.
The script was written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the man behind episodes of GLEE, BIG LOVE and the popular comic book adaptation of THE STAND. Peirce’s addition will make many people happy, especially horror fans who are hopeful for something more than a cheap cash-in. Of course casting is key to the film. Will they choose an unknown or instead give a famous young actress the chance to push herself?
