AN IDIOT ABROAD
Rating: Not Rated, but it’s definitely in the TVMA category.
Studio: 2 Entertain/BBC
MSRP: $34.98, but Amazon has it for $25.99.
Running Time: Eight episodes, totalling aprx. 347 minutes
What’s Going On?
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant send their friend Karl Pilkington on a trip around the world, even though he’s content to read about it online and stay home. As Karl, very reluctantly, experiences the fascinating and oddest traditions of cultures around the world, hilarity ensues.
Who’s In It:
Karl Pilkington is the focus here, but Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are also featured frequently.
If You Like…:
Ricky Gervais’ podcast, or the animated Ricky Gervais Show, which was based on the podcast and on which Karl was a regular guest, you’ll love this because it’s all Karl all the time, and to say Karl is an odd bird is only touching the tip of a very messed up iceberg.
Special Features:
The Preview Show features Merchant and Gervais explaining their motivations for creating the show, and there are also a few deleted scenes and a photo gallery featuring Karl’s photos from his travels.
The Technical Gist
No complaints here.
The Verdict
While the series is kind of a one-trick-pony, and doesn’t necessarily merit repeated viewings, especially due to the slim special features, but it’s pretty damned hilarious if you’ve never seen it before. QUEUE IT.
