I get the feeling that Kristen Wiig will be asked about BRIDESMAIDS 2 for many years to come. It seems that the actress/writer has (rightfully) moved on from the hit comedy. But Universal made a boatload of cash from the film so you bet they want a follow-up.
There have been a lot of rumors about BRIDESMAIDS 2 for the last month or so. It was reported that Universal was set to make a sequel with or without Wiig. Several of the co-star, including Melissa McCarthy chimed in, saying they didn’t see it happening. Now E! Online has gotten an actual quote from Wiig herself which pretty much confirms what we already knew.
Asked about a second film, Wiig said:
“We’re not planning on doing one. We had a special time making the first one, but we’re really excited to try something else.”
Wiig has previously stated that she and co-writer Annie Mumolo were hard at work on a new project so that’s probably the “something new” she’s referring to.
Now this doesn’t mean Universal won’t still push forward with a spin-off BRIDESMAIDS film but most people agree that would be a bad move. Without Wiig, producer Judd Apatow and other co-stars would be unlikely to return. If that’s the case, it’s not really a BRIDESMAIDS movie at all.
You’ll notice that Wiig said she’s not “planning” on doing the film. That’s like when a politician says he or she doesn’t ”plan” on being a vice presidential candidate. It may happen but they’re not actively working for it. So a BRIDESMAIDS sequel might happen someday but not any time soon.
