Matthew Vaughn Will Direct X-MEN: FIRST CLASS Sequel

This news isn’t too surprising but still good to hear.

Matthew Vaughn has closed a deal with Fox to the direct the follow-up to last year’s X-MEN: FIRST CLASS. The sequel’s script will be written by Simon Kinberg (X-MEN: THE LAST STAND) and produced by Bryan Singer. Surprisingly, long-time Vaughn collaborator Jane Goldman isn’t attached but perhaps she’ll join later.

It was assumed that Vaughn would return for the follow-up but there were some concern when it wasn’t announced right after FIRST CLASS’s debut. Some thought that maybe a sequel wouldn’t happen at all, bumming out fans who wished to see Magneto and Professor X do battle through the 60′s, 70′s and beyond.

So what will X-MEN: FIRST CLASS: THE SECOND CLASS (great title, Brandon!) be about? Vaughn has previously stated that he’d like to address the JFK assassination but I doubt Fox would be too keen to tackle that sensitive subject. Regardless of the exact plot, it will be exciting to see the mutants’ struggles parallel the chaotic and troubled times of the 60′s.

Thanks to Deadline for the news.

So I guess the big question is will Vaughn continue to tie the series into “historic” events as he jumps forward decade by decade and if so what will they be? What event in the 70′s could serve as both a challenge and a metaphor as perfectly as the Cuban Missile Crisis in his first film? Although it will be fun to see the X-Men in the decade of excess . . . Disco mutants here we come!
