Ah, the spinoff. Sometimes spinoffs are great (DARIA) and sometimes they’re so, so bad (JOEY, SAVED BY THE BELL: THE COLLEGE YEARS). The mixed results don’t stop networks from trying though! Why create something new? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
Deadline says NBC is eyeing a spinoff of THE OFFICE starring Rainn Wilson as the anti-social, unfriendly salesperson Dwight Schrute. The series, which would revolve around Schrute and his peculiar family who all live on a beet farm, was created by Wilson and OFFICE producer/writer/star Paul Lieberstein. No deals have been made but The Peacock is picturing a 2013 mid-season premiere for the show.
Here’s how a source described the process and the idea:
“Paul and Rainn have been joking for years about Dwight’s life on the farm, his family and how ill-suited he is to run a B&B. A while ago, it started to feel like a show to them. NBC agreed, it’s been further developed to include multiple generations, many cousins and neighbors.”
If plans move forward and the show is created, Wilson wouldn’t immediately leave THE OFFICE. Instead, he’d return for the next season of the show and then exit before his new series premieres.
Deadline goes on to say that NBC is deadly serious about keeping THE OFFICE around for at least a few more seasons. They’ve approached the main stars recently, seeing where they stand regarding a return. I wouldn’t be surprised if the major players start leaving the series in droves soon. Ed Helms is gearing up for a third HANGOVER film and others, like John Krasinski and Mindy Kaling, have been itching to try new things.
