It was number 4 on my most underrated films of 2011, so naturally I’m thrilled to report that INSIDIOUS will be getting a sequel. According to Variety, James Wan is in talks to direct again with Leigh Whannell on board to script. Jason Blum will again produce through his Blumhouse Prods. company with Brian Kavanaugh Jones, Oren Peli and Steven Schneider exec producing.
The sequel – which is eyeing a production start date later this year with a 2013 release date – will be financed by Alliance Films which also financed the first film and distributed stateside through Film District. INSIDIOUS was a surprise hit last year making $54 million doemstically and $155 million worldwide. Wan and Whannell are keeping the plot of the sequel under wraps.
“I believe that James Wan and I achieved what we set out to do — create a horror film for horror fans,” Whannell said. “So it is with great excitement that we announce our commitment to a second installment of this story. Both of us feel that we can mine more terror from the world we created and know that if we assemble every member of the original team, we will have an amazing continuation of the story for fans of the first film.”
