Public Enemy #1 Lars Von Trier is gearing up for his next film, NYMPHOMANIAC. We don’t know much about the new project. When asked about it back at Cannes, Von Trier joked that it was going to be a hardcore porn. That was a joke, right? This is Von Trier so we can’t be too sure. One request, Lars: if it does feature hardcore sex, please leave the scissors at home.
In hopes of securing funding, Trust Nordisk have released the official synopsis for the film before the start of the European Film Market. The synopsis ensures that Von Trier will explore some interesting – and suggestive – territory.
NYMPHOMANIAC is the light and poetic story of a woman’s erotic journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-‐diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe.
On a cold winter’s evening Seligman, an old bachelor, finds Joe semi‐unconscious and beaten up in an alleyway. After bringing her to his flat he sees to her wounds while trying to understand how things could have gone so wrong for her. He listens intently as she over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushly branched-‐out and multi faceted story of her life, rich in associations and interjecting incidents.
NYMPHOMANIAC seems like it’ll follow the Von Trier tradition of exploring damaged women and their bruised psyches. How rough and “erotic” will it get? Only time will tell but knowing Von Trier you can bet it won’t be easy to watch.
