Its working title may have been HE LOVES ME, but apparently the execs at Fox Searchlight didn’t, and it’s gone through a name change to RUBY SPARKS. Ooh! She sounds kooky and quite incorrigible. I bet she wears vintage clothes and funky hats!
Much has been made of actress Zoe Kazan’s (IT’S COMPLICATED) writing debut. I personally can’t wait to see the film as the high-concept sounds incredibly funny, poignant, and perhaps similar in vibe to ADAPTATION and STRANGER THAN FICTION. The film is directed by the LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE team of Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton.
Not only is the writing and directing pedigree there, but the film’s cast is also pretty phenomenal: Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan, Antonio Banderas, Annette Bening, Steve Coogan, Elliott Gould, Chris Messina and Deborah Ann Woll.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Calvin (Dano) is a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career but is now struggling with his writing – as well as his romantic life. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character named Ruby who inspires him. When Calvin finds Ruby (Kazan), in the flesh, sitting on his couch about a week later, he is completely flabbergasted that his words have turned into a living, breathing person.
RUBY SPARKS comes to life (albeit on limited screens) on July 25. Can you say summer sleeper hit – not unlike LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE?! Will they have a buzz-worthy hit on their hands again? We think so.
