TRAILER: NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH, Now Titled THE WATCH, Spotlights Crime, Aliens, & Filth

Oh, boy. The marketing department over at 20th Century Fox must have been sent into overdrive (understandably) after the Trayvon Martin shooting occurred. Let’s just say this wasn’t exactly the kind viral marketing campaign they were working on. In response to that tragedy, Fox pulled the trailer from theaters immediately. Again, perhaps in a move to distance themselves from the now (slightly) taboo idea of a neighborhood watch, the studio has re-titled Ben Stiller’s NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH to now – quite simply – THE WATCH. Out with the negative and in with the positive, right?! Well…. in with the hilariously dirty!

According to HitFix, here’s the studio’s official word on the matter:

Twentieth Century Fox launches the next phase of its marketing campaign for the summer comedy THE WATCH in raucous style – with a red band trailer debuting today on IGN.COM. The trailer presents the first unexpurgated look at the R-rated shenanigans of Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade.

THE WATCH is the new title for “Neighborhood Watch.” As the subject matter of this alien invasion comedy bears no relation whatsoever to the recent tragic events in Florida, the studio altered the title to avoid any accidental or unintended misimpression that it might.

THE WATCH lands in theaters everywhere on July 27, 2012. The film is directed by Akiva Schaffer, written by Jared Stern and Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg and Justin Theroux, and produced by Shawn Levy and Michael Ewing.

Based on this trailer below, they couldn’t be more correct. No resemblence whatsoever! Take a look and share your thoughts. Thanks IGN!
