John Hawkes is pretty damn great, no?! Relegated to supporting roles for years now in critically acclaimed films like MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE and WINTER’S BONE – and standing out in those compelling roles - he’s rightfully stepping up to take some leading man roles. Well, stepping up in a way.
Based on the remarkable true story of poet Mark O’Brien, who was left paralyzed from the neck down by polio, THE SESSIONS (which has gone through two title changes - THE SIX SESSIONS and THE SURROGATE) reveals the world of sex surrogacy, where a trained sex therapist facilitates or even performs sexual acts for disabled patients. Just like last year’s SHAME, Fox Searchlight seems to enjoying dealing with taboo topics. And isn’t pushing the envelope what great filmmaking is all about?! We like to think so.
From what I’ve heard from those who caught this delightful gem at Sundance, it’s a guaranteed hit. It looks warm, sweet, and poignant. And that’s just the kind of movie we should all have in our lives!
THE SESSIONS will be in session starting on October 26.
