This Week’s Big Releases
FRIENDS WITH KIDS
Synopsis: Two friends who have remained platonic start to complicate their relationship when they decide to have a child together. Jennifer Westfeldt wrote and driected the film, which also stars Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, Maya Rudolph, Megan Fox and Chris O’Dowd.
Tomatometer Rating: 68%
Special Features: There’s a commentary with Jennifer Westfeldt, Jon Hamm and Director of Photography William Rexer, a making of featurette, a gag reel, and a featurette in which Adam Scott teaches Megan Fox how to play video games – because that’s insightful, I suppose.
Deals: Amazon, Best Buy and Target all have the blu-ray combo pack for $19.99.
Buy/Queue/Skip: Brandon really enjoyed the film and its natural portayal of adult relationships. If you’re in for a more subdued take on some of the material brought up in films like BRIDESMAIDS or other Apatow fare without the gross-out jokes, give this one a QUEUE. JC will be reviewing the blu-ray later this week.
CASA DE MI PADRE
Synopsis: Will Ferrell goes on a Spanish novela fever dream and brings along Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal for the ride.
Tomatometer Rating: 44%
Special Features: There’s a making of featurette, deleted scenes, commentary with Director Matt Piedmont, writer Andrew Steele and Will Ferrell and fake commercials for beer and cigarettes.
Deals: Amazon and Best Buy have the blu-ray combo pack for $17.99.
Buy/Queue/Skip: Mel gave this film half a star. That’s all you need to know. SKIP IT.
Also Available This Week
Also available this week are romance SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN, which Courtney reviewed as well as space prison actioner LOCKOUT which Courtney really liked.
Martin Scorsese’s MEAN STREETS finds its way to blu-ray this week along with classics like HIGH NOON, with Gary Cooper and the original INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS from 1959.
Best Buy also has some pretty excellent deals on blu-rays, including SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, THE MATRIX, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, GHOSTBUSTERS and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL all on sale for ten bucks!
Manny’s Pick
EXTRATERRESTRIAL, Spanish Director Nacho Vigalondo’s sci-fi romance/comedy of manners is available this week. It’s just the kind of low key film you need to decompress after the insanity of Comic Con. It’s funny and subtle and just the antidote you need to calm down after the bombastic craziness of the Con. Check out my review or Courtney’s AFI Fest review for more.
See you next week!
