The world is full of too many sequels but some sequels sound really, really cool. Some sequels we want. Badly!
Example: a proposed foll0w-up to David Cronenberg’s 2006 gangster pic, EASTERN PROMISES. More Viggo Mortensen, more Vincent Cassel, more brutal underworld antics. Yes please!
But, sadly, the movie is no longer happening. Speaking with The Playlist, Cronenberg said this about his next film: “It was supposed to be ‘Eastern Promises 2.’ But that’s dead.”
Darn it! Cronenberg then gave some more information:
“We were supposed to start shooting ‘Eastern Promises 2′ in October. [But] It’s done… If you don’t like it talk to James Schamus at Focus. It was his decision.”
October? That’s right around the corner. Really, Focus Features? You’re going to cancel a film that close to the beginning of production? Gah!
In all honesty, I think most people were surprised Focus ever showed interest in a sequel. The first movie was a modest succes ($17 million domestic, $50 million worldwide) but it didn’t scream “Sequel me, please!” No matter, we were dying to see more of Mortensen, he was electric in the first one (same goes for Cassel).
But apparently Focus is no longer interested in returning to the violent world of Cronenberg crime.
