Marvel executives, if you’re reading this (you’re not) I have a simple message for you: do what it takes to get James Gunn to direct GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Make it happen.
That isn’t just the plea of a raging fanboy, it’s actually a real possibility. The Hollywood Reporter says that Gunn (SLITHER, SUPER) is Marvel’s top choice to take on the superhero film. The studio is now in talks with the director so, unless the deal falls apart, it looks likely that he’ll be sitting in the director’s chair.
Just in case things don’t work out, Marvel also has other choices: Peyton Reed (BRING IT ON) and Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden (HALF NELSON).
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, which was announced last month at Comic-Con, is one of Marvel’s newest, biggest projects. It’ll follow a team of offbeat intergalactic superheroes including Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, Gamorra, Groot (yes, he’s a tree) and Star Lord. One of their major villains is Thanos, who you remember from the stinger in THE AVENGERS.
If Gunn ends up directing GUARDIANS, he’ll be yet another smart choice by Marvel. Remember when they picked Jon Favreau to head up IRON MAN? Favreau didn’t have much experience with big action movies but he handled it beautifully. Same goes for Joss Whedon, whose THE AVENGERS is now the biggest film of the year. While Favreau, Whedon and now Gunn might not have been obvious choices to handle superhero epics, they have a real understanding of humor, character and how to tell a fun and exciting story.
James Gunn is a great choice for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Let’s hope this comes together.
