While I wish it was still called THE WETTEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD, John Hillcoat’s LAWLESS looks pretty damn swell. Sporting a script by Nick Cave (who wrote the blistering Western THE PROPOSITION for Hillcoat back in 2006) and an ensemble cast that includes Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, Shia LeBeouf and Guy Pearce (doing creepy like nobody’s business), the movie looks to be a great capper to this summer.
VICE posted a red band trailer for the flick today (though I saw it at aintitcool), and the spot sports a quiet, elegiac tone reminiscent of the one Hillcoat brought to his adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s THE ROAD. I’m hoping the Australian director can knock this one out of the park (and that fellow Aussie Andrew Dominik can follow it with his KILLING THEM SOFTLY in October).
Speaking as someone who has been utterly disappointed with Summer ’12, LAWLESS is my last ditch hope for the season’s salvation. On August 29th, we’ll all get to see if I was placing my bet on the right horse.
