What’s Going On?
The Doctor, in a newly regenerated form, is exiled on Earth and in a hospital. Meanwhile, meteorites are falling to Earth and one of them contains an intelligence that can manufacture Autons, which the Nestene plan on using to take over the world. All the while UNIT is trying to find the Doctor and get his assistance in managing this whole thing.
Who’s In It:
John Pertwee makes his first appearance here as Three, and Caroline John is Dr. Liz Shaw, the new companion for this series.
If You Like…:
The history of Doctor Who, creepy flesh masks, UNIT (which Martha, the companion from season 3 of the modern Who joined after her run with The Doctor), and scientific advisers, then check this out.
Special Features:
As per usual, this disc is near bursting with special features.
There are two audio commentaries: one with actors Nicholas Courtney and Caroline John, as well as with producer Derrick Sherwin and script editor Terrance Dicks.
There’s a making-of featurette with Jon Pertwee, Sherwin and with costume designer Christine Rawlins.
If you’re interested in the history of television and how it pertains to Doctor Who then Regenerations is definitely a special feature worth checking out. It looks at the challenges the production faced in 1970 when Who was transitioning from a black and white to a color broadcast.
The Technical Gist
No complaints here!
The Verdict
I liked this adventure a little more than I have some of the other classic Who episodes, particularly because this one grounded the Doctor on Earth and really had the Doctor relying on his own intellect to solve things. QUEUE IT.
