Fans were cautious when the POLTERGEIST remake was announced. Nearly every living, breathing film fan cherishes the original film so a remake seems unnecessary. However, the project has two good things going for it: it is being written by David Lindsay-Abaire (RABBIT HOLE) and will be produced by Sam Raimi, a man who knows his horror.
Now comes word that Raimi might be more than just producer. Speaking with THR, Lindsay-Abaire said Raimi is producing and directing. What first seemed like a typo was confirmed by writer Scott Feinberg, who tweeted that Lindsay-Abaire did in fact say Raimi was directing. Of course nothing official has been said but the writer is obviously under the impression that Raimi will helm the project.
Here’s Feinberg’s tweet confirming Lindsay-Abaire’s statement:
@hitfixgregory @devincf @drewathitfix Lindsay-Abaire told me that Raimi was directing it. I had never heard of the possibility before that.

Would Raimi directing POLTERGEIST be a good idea? The man has created several horror classics of his own so to see him take on another would certainly be interesting and probably a bit inspired. And we know Raimi isn’t against remakes, the upcoming EVIL DEAD is proof of that.
We certainly want to see Raimi make more horror movies though we’re still not sure how we feel about him taking on POLTERGEIST. While it would be a fun movie it seems like he should spend his time working on brand new material. But perhaps we’re overreacting. Maybe he stays on only as a producer and all this speculation is for nothing.
