It’s always disappointing to learn when a studio caves to public pressure to re-edit their films. Such is the case for director Ruben Fleischer’s GANGSTER SQUAD. Not only did the film starring America’s beloved Baby Goose (Ryan Gosling) get pushed out of awards contention from a September to January 2013 release, but filmmakers chose to re-cut the film due to mounting pressure surrounding the Colorado movie theater shootings. This is like pouring salt on our wounds.
This second trailer focus’ more on Mickey Cohen’s “reign of terror” in Southern California. GANGSTER SQUAD tells the true story of gangster Mickey Cohen (Penn) as he relocates his crew from the East Coast to the West. Since there was no other heavy mobster presence in SoCal at the time, Cohen was given free reign of LA. Fed up with his tyranny, a small group of police officers banded together to rid the city of Cohen’s crime empire.
GANGSTER SQUAD opens on January 11, 2013. Do you think executives made the right move by trimming the picture? Or do you believe this was much ado about nothing? One thing is for sure, we are still totally on board for some mobster mayhem.
