Marc Webb’s new SPIDER-MAN series will be different from Sam Raimi’s take on the Marvel character but some familiar faces will reappear. We already know that Shailene Woodley will be playing Mary Jane Watson in the the upcoming THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 so now we’re moving on to the other coveted, major role: Harry Osborn.
Harry, of course, is Peter Parker’s best friend, sometimes enemy and son of Norman Osborn a.k.a. The Green Goblin. He’s a pivotal part, once played by James Franco in the SPIDER-MAN 1, 2 and 3. So who will play Parker’s pal in the new sequel?
THR says four actors are in contention for the part. The names listed are Douglas Booth (NOAH), Sam Claflin (SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE), Boyd Holbrook (THE HOST, HATFIELDS AND MCCOYS) and Eddie Redmayne (MY WEEK WITH MARILYN, LES MISERABLES). This news comes after rumors that Brady Corbet, Dane DeHaan and Alden Ehrenreich were trying out for the part. That’s quite a variety.
While Sam Raimi’s Harry Osborn was dark, brooding and sometimes downright bizarre, sources say the new Harry will be more charismatic and athletic. These names confirm that.
So where are they taking the new Harry Osborn? Will he end up being a villain like he has in the comics and in previous adaptations or will he remain a steadfast and close pal of Peter Parker? Maybe he’ll be both but that means they’ll have to introduce Norman Osborn pretty soon…unless they plan on making this new series into more than just a simple trilogy.
