Release Review – Week of November 13, 2012

This Week’s Big Releases

BRAVE
Synopsis: CHANGE YER FAHTE. Set in ancient Scotland, BRAVE centers around Princess Merida, who has to face not only an inevitable arranged marriage, but her bear of a mother.
Tomatometer Rating: 78%
Special Features: There’s a TON of special features here, including deleted and extended scenes, an alterante opening, lots and lots of making of featurettes, an inside look at the Pixar Animation studios, an audio commentary and a brand new short as well as “La Luna”, the Academy Award nominated short that preceeded the film.
Deals: $49.99 but Amazon has the 3D blu-ray combo pack for $27.99.
Buy/Queue/Skip: While I may have lauded BRAVE as one of the best animated features of the year, PARANORMAN and the “Paper Man” short have both been released since then, and are both better. Though BRAVE is still a lot of fun and provides a great role model for young girls. RENT IT.

THE WATCH
Synopsis: It’s trying to be ATTACK THE BLOCK, but it’s really not. Aliens invade the suburbs. Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller and Jonah Hill show up and Richard Ayoade makes a poor impression on American audiences when he’s really much better than this movie.
Tomatometer Rating: 17%
Special Features: There are deleted scenes, a gag reel and a making of featurette.
Deals: $39.99 but Amazon has it for $22.99.
Buy/Queue/Skip: Watch ATTACK THE BLOCK instead. SKIP IT.

Manny’s Pick

In honor of impending Black Friday madness, my pick this week is SPACE JAIL, also known as LOCKOUT, available on Netflix Watch Instantly, starring Guy Pearce as John McClane in space. If you’ve ever been to a Black Friday sale or, like me, have worked a midnight Black Friday shift, prison is the most apt comparison for that particular brand of insanity. Happy shopping and may God have mercy on your soul.

See you next week – break out the maternity gear for Thanksgiving!
