Morgan Spurlock is a talented, fun documentarian who has created SUPER SIZE ME, COMIC-CON: A FAN’S HOME and the fascinating FX series 30 DAYS. And now Spurlock is taking on One Direction. Yes, the boy band. I…yeah, I don’t know what to say.
THR says Spurlock will direct a 3D documentary about the super popular British group. The film will feature behind-the-scenes moments and slice of life narratives about the group, much like KATY PERRY: PART OF ME and JUSTIN BIEBER: NEVER SAY NEVER. Spurlock will produce the film with Simon Cowell, the man who discovered One Direction. So, yeah, Morgan Spurlock is directing a feature film about One Direction.
This is surprising and somewhat confounding news. I never imagined Spurlock would take on a film like this. It’s a shame, too, because the guy turns in good work and it’ll be disappointing to see him spend time on a One Direction film when he could be creating something as interesting and engaging as his previous features.
But, hey, we should just let the guy work. Besides, the movie will hit theaters August 30, 2013. After that, he can get back to making the charming films we’re used to.
