Talk about a monstrous step up.
Deadline is reporting that Colin Treverrow, director of last year’s sleeper hit SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED, will helm JURASSIC PARK 4 for Universal. I don’t have to tell you that this is a huge project and this is a huge deal for Treverrow. While GUARANTEED was a smash in its own right, it was a minor one. That film drew in about $4 million dollars and the JURASSIC PARK movies have raked in nearly $2 billion worldwide.
Obviously Universal and Steven Spielberg trust the guy and they should, SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED was fun and well-crafted. While this will be much, much larger than his previous work, he’ll be guided by Spielberg and others. It’s not like he’ll start terrified and sobbing on the set, he’s in good hands. But I’m sure the pressure is on Treverrow to deliver. Moving from a sci-fi romantic comedy to a billion dollar blockbuster is massive.
Oddly enough, Treverrow was one of the many, many names thrown around for the new STAR WARS franchise. That job went to J.J. Abrams of course. Seems like Treverrow landed a storied franchise of his own.
We still don’t know what JURASSIC PARK 4 is about. We know that Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES) have completed a script and we know that the movie will be released in June 2014. That means Treverrow is going to have to get to work quickly, he’ll be learning the ropes as he goes.
Colin Treverrow’s first film was imaginative, fresh and exciting. I can’t wait to see what he does with Spielberg’s dinos.
